Geothermal Sites

Tiwi

The Tiwi geothermal steam field in Albay Province is the oldest in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. A complete bio-region, the area showing surface thermal manifestations became a natural object of public curiosity. These thermal manifestations were recognized in the early 1960s to have power generation potential by COMVOL (Commission on Volcanology).

The 2.5 kW produced by the Philippines’ first geothermal plant in Barangay Cale, Tiwi, Albay was a mere hint of the country’s geothermal potential. Today, Tiwi is the third largest geothermal facility in the Philippines with a 234 MW installed generating capacity.
